For a mother, on her birthday

Mama, I don’t remember the years you spent tired, but you do. I remember the mango you cut into the shape of a little boat, and how you handed it over without a word, like the whole morning belonged to me. I’m older now and I still don’t know how to say thank you without it sounding too small. So here it is, small and true: thank you. Happy birthday.
